Silence is golden, right? Here at Soundproof Panda we appreciate the value of silence and we’re not the only ones.

Here are 25 brilliant quotes from some of the world’s greatest minds on the value of some good old peace and quiet:

1 – Silence is one of the hardest arguments to refute.– Josh Billings

Josh Billings was an influential 19th century who wrote extensively for the New York Weekly. His quote shows that he believed in using silence as a powerful tool in conversation.

If only he had soundproofed his walls, all of his arguments would have been irrefutable!

2 – A fence to wisdom is silence. – Akiba ben Joseph, Pirkei Avot, 3:17.

Akiba had a very different view to Josh Billings, he believed that silence got in the way of wisdom!

If he had known about soundproofing it sounds like he would have been very much against it!

3 – Silence is more eloquent than words. – Thomas Carlyle, Heroes and Hero Worship.

Thomas Carlyle had a similar understanding of silence to Josh Billings.

I only wish my wife shared the same view, I’m very well spoken when it comes to silence!

Ivan is not wrong, if the foolish were valued silence more highly then there would be a lot less business in the soundproofing trade!

Henry believed that silence can solve a whole lot of problems, I guess that’s why sales of sound proof insulation, sound board, resilient channels and all manner of soundproofing materials are so high these days!

Conversely August Strindberg had a very different view to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, he believed that too much silence was toxic.

He’s not wrong, don’t be afraid to speak out just because you have got poor sound insulation in your home and you’re worried 1,000 people will hear you…just get some sound insulation installed first!

Without speech silence wouldn’t be a valuable commodity, I would argue that they are equally great and that they both need each other to exist.

I’m pretty sure that Robert wrote this after soundproofing his windows!

I don’t understand how that is even possible but I would love to meet the person that Stanislaw wrote this about and hear his silent grammatical errors!

That is very much how many people feel after soundproofing a particularly noisy room. Where once the silence was perpetually disturbed by a noisy street or noisy neighbours now the silence is so palpable that it is almost deafening…much like a thunderclap!

Woah, I didn’t even know that they had stud walls back in Shakespeare’s time.

They must must have though because Shakespeare is clearly talking about the drum effect which causes sound to echo and amplify within the cavity of an uninsulated stud wall!
